I-70 Semi-Trailer Accident

At 14:35 on September 4th, 2026 Deer Trail Rural Fire Protection District was dispatched to a reported semi-trailer accident with entrapment on eastbound I-70 at mile marker 326. Based on the 911 reports Byers Fire Protection District and Strasburg Fire Protection District were dispatched on mutual-aid, and an EMS helicopter was placed on airborne standby. Additional callers were reporting that the truck was hauling a load of “bleach.” First arriving Chief 71 sized up a semi-off of the highway into a tree with major damage and a party trapped. Multiple 1-galllon containers of 6% sodium hypochlorite were ruptured along with both saddle tanks. Chief 71 passed Command to Tender 71 and assumed extrication group. Chief 81 was assigned as Hazmat group. Medic 71 assumed patient care and assisted by Medic 81. The patient was quickly extricated with moderate injuries. Possible reactions between the hypochlorite and diesel were assessed and determined to not be a significant concern. AirLife was cancelled and the patient transported by Medic 71 to a local trauma center for evaluation. The scene was turned over to CSP Hazmat for further investigation and mitigation.
