West Metro Apartment Fire

On November 8th, 2024 at 04:47 West Metro Fire Rescue responded to a reported structure fire in the 8100 block of W. 12th Ave. in Lakewood. Jeffcom advised that multiple callers with smoke and flames showing and Lakewood Police on scene reported a working fire with possible parties trapped inside. Engine 3 arrived to a small single-story apartment building with a heavy fire showing with fire all around the building and pulled a 1 3/4 line in for fire attack and the primary search. Engine 1 secured the water supply to Engine 3 and Medic 1 assisted with the primary search. Engine 16 pulled a 2nd line off Engine 3 for fire attack and search with Engine 2. District 1 arrived and took command on the Alpha side in the offensive strategy. Crews chased fire in the attic space before the fire was put under control. There are five units in the building, some are unoccupied and all residents got out safely with no injuries. Crews rescued ferrets from one unit. The fire was caused by an electric space heater, located in one of two unoccupied apartment units. The heater was being used to keep pipes from freezing. The building is a total loss. Four people were displaced, and two cats in one unit did not survive the fire. Additional information provided by West Metro Fire Rescue
