Byers Propane Truck Rollover
Byers Propane Truck Rollover
At 13:31 hours on January 31st, 2025 Byers Fire Protection District and Strasburg Fire Protection District were dispatched to a reported rollover MVA involving a propane tanker truck. Initial reports also indicated the possibility that the truck was releasing propane vapor. The incident location was on the far northeast corner of the Byers District, which led to a prolonged response time, which was made worse due to muddy road conditions. First arriving Chief 71 sized up a medium size propane tanker on its side with the drive self-extricated. A small product leak was confirmed from a valve on the rear of the truck. Due to the remote area of the accident no evacuations were required. The driver was assessed by Medic 81 and declined transport. An additional tanker was requested from the shipper for product transfer along with Colorado State Patrol HazMat. Attempts to control the product release through auto-refrigeration were not successful, however, manipulation of the rear valving did slow the release to some degree. A grounding field was established from the damaged tanker and bonded to the receiving tanker. Due to the position of the tanker, and the valve selected for the transfer, not all of the product could be initially removed. A heavy tow truck was used to put the tanker back its wheels and an additional assessment was performed to ascertain if additional product transfer was required, or if enough product had been already removed to mitigate any further leakage. No additional hazards were identified, so the tanker was cleared to be towed back to the shippers yard, and all units returned to service.
