At 06:40 on November 15th, 2025 West Metro Fire Rescue responded to a reported structure fire in the 6400 block of 13th Ave. in Lakewood. Jeffcom 911 received several 911 callers reporting smoke and flames coming from an upper level unit of a apartment building with evacuations. Engine 1 arrived to a medium size two-story apartment complex with a working fire and pulled 1 3/4 line in for fire attack and search with Medic 1. Engine 2 secured the water supply, Engine 16 assisted with the primary search on the 2nd floor and Medic 2 as medical. Engine 3 pulled a 2nd line and Tower 2 went to the roof. District 1 arrived and assumed command in the offensive strategy and requested a additional medic and engine. Firefighters were able to rescue three cats and a bird, but unfortunately one of the cats did not make it. Crews found two of the cats hiding in a closet in one apartment and were able to coax them out. The fire traveled from the deck up into the attic and extended to another second floor apartment. The fire unit had extensive damage, including where the fire burned through the roof. Two units below had water damage, and there is smoke damage throughout the building. Approximately 30 people were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross. The fire was put under control and crews worked an extended overhaul and investigation. WMFR investigators determined that the fire was caused by an unattended space heater on the wood deck of a second floor apartment. A rekindle at the same apartment complex was dispatched later in the evening and crews responded back out, more here: Lakewood West 13th Ave Rekindle Apartment Fire.
