At 14:33 on March 18th, 2021, the La Junta Fire Department was dispatched to the 500 block of Lawrence Ave. for a possible structure fire. On arrival, crews found smoke showing from the eves of the residence and updated the incident to a working structure fire. Crews made an aggressive attack through the ceiling to find fire actively burning in the attic around the chimney area. The fire was contained quickly. The ladder truck was deployed to help gain access to the peak of the roof since it was metal roofing. Crews then switched to salvage and overhaul to make sure all hot spots were extinguished. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was from a malfunctioning wood burning stove pipe that ran through the attic. Additional information provided by the La Junta Fire Department.
