On July 5th, 2026 at 15:56 West Metro Fire Rescue responded to a possible structure fire in the 6600 block of W. Cedar Place in Lakewood. Jeffcom 911 received multiple callers with possibly two houses on fire with animals still inside and Engine 7 advised of a big header. Engine 7 arrived on scene to a working fire from a one-story duplex, pulled a 2 1/2 for fire attack with the fire spreading to another structure. Engine 3 pulled a 1 3/4 line to the 2nd structure on fire with Medic 7. Engine 1 secured the water supply to Engine 7 from S. Pierce St. and W. Cedar Place and District 1 arrived and assumed command. Tower 2 went to the roof with fire from the attic on the main fire unit and started master stream operations. While crews worked to extinguish the fire and protect nearby homes, two propane tanks exploded, intensifying the fire and creating a more dangerous environment for firefighters. Crews were able to contain the fire to one side of the duplex, limiting damage to the adjoining unit. The crew with Tower 2 searched the home and found the family’s cat with some smoke inhalation, which was transported to a local vet by the family. The fire spread from the back deck of the duplex into the attic on one side and along a wooden fence to a neighboring structure and a vehicle. WMFR investigators determined the fire started when embers from a gas fire pit fell beneath the outside deck. The embers smoldered for hours after the fire pit was turned off before eventually igniting the deck. There was no injuries reported. Additional information provided by West Metro Fire Rescue
