On January 20th, 2008 Grand Junction Fire Department was dispatched to a reported commercial structure fire at KREX TV, the NBC affiliate in Mesa County. Firefighters arrived on scene and found heavy smoke and fire coming from the building. The building had been renovated several times, creating many dead air spaces. Safety concerns due to the potential for backdrafts led firefighters to battle the fire from the exterior only. It took several hours to extinguish the fire which smoldered for over 24 hours. All five employees working inside were able to escape without injury. Investigators suspect the fire may have started with a heated in a first floor hallway. Damage was estimated at $6 million dollars, making it the most significant fire loss in Grand Junction history at the time. The station went off the air around 10:30am. Those with cable and satellite were able to pick up feeds from CBS Denver and Fox.
