Lower North Fork Fire

The Colorado State Forest Service conducted a 50-acre prescribed burn in the Foxton area on March 22nd, 2012, crews patrolled the perimeter daily. Around 13:40 on March 26th, 2012 during a Red Flag Warning, crews spotted embers that blown in heavy winds across the perimeter, which started spot fires. Within 10 minutes 911 calls were coming in reported smoke. North Fork Fire Protection District & Elk Creek Fire Protection District responded to the area around 13:50, and crews found a wind-driven wildland fire in heavy fuels about 1.5 acres in size. Crews requested more resources at 14:15, and again at 14:30. At 16:10 the fire was estimated to be at 10 to 15 acres, and evacuations started to be sent out at 16:40. The fire was 100% contained on April 2nd, 2012, and burned 4,140 acres. Three residents died in the fire and destroying 26 structures.
