John Whelan Funeral
John Whelan Funeral Service was held at the Faith Bible Church in Arvada on July 21st, 2015. Sunrise over the Rockies signaled a call for all flags to fly at half-staff in honor of Denver Firefighter/Engineer John Whelan. Firefighters from across Colorado gathered to pay their respect to the Whelan Family and their sisters and brothers with the Denver Fire Department. The time and dedication of honor guards and pipes & drums groups helped to make the funeral service especially profound. At the conclusion of the service a procession of apparatus escorted Firefighter Whelan on his last ride with Engine and Truck Company 8 through the streets of Denver, past Fire Station 8 and then to his final resting place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Wheat Ridge. Firefighter Whelan was seriously injured at a commercial structure fire on June 28th, 2015 at 3860 Blake St. (Denver Blake Street Commercial Fire). Multiple companies were put to work checking for fire extension after a dumpster fire auto-exposed the building. Truck 8 was assigned to check the roof and tragically, Whelan fell through to the floor below. Interior crews and Denver Paramedics immediately rendered assistance and transported to Denver Health Medical Center. On the evening of July 15th, 2015 Whelan experienced complications from his injuries which ultimately lead to his death.
