Colfax Motel Fire

At 09:12 on March 8th, 2016 Denver Fire Department was alerted to a commercial structure fire at the Bar X Motel 5001 W. Colfax Ave. with dispatch receiving multiple 911 calls. Engine 20 arrived to at a 2-story building with smoke showing and heavy fire from the second floor balcony, established their own water supply and advanced a 2 1/2 attack line. Engine 6 pulled a back-up line in, Truck 12, Rescue 1 & Hamer 1 were all assigned to primary search. Engine 1 laid in from Xavier St. & W Colfax Ave. and Engine 23 laid in from W. 16th Ave. to the Charlie side. Denver Police Department closed down eastbound Colfax Ave. at Yates St. for fire ops and investigation. Engine 20 quickly located one burn victim, who was treated and transported to a local hospital. EMS Command requested multiple ambulance to the scene. Tower 4 arrived and was assigned as RIT and Ops 2 went to the Charlie side where people were hanging out of the second floor trying to escape the fire, and Tower 23 went to the rear and assisted with ladders. The fire spread laterally along the covered walkway and severely damaging 5 units. The fire was placed under control at 09:46 and Denver Paramedics transported a total of 2 patients with burns and smoke inhalation. The fire may have been caused by careless disposal of smoking materials on the second floor.
