Kannah Creek Brush Fire
Kannah Creek Brush Fire
At 11:27 March 8th, 2018 Land’s End Fire Protection District was dispatched to a controlled burn that was out of control near Hwy. 50 and Kannah Creek Road and heading towards the gas plant. The Mesa County Sheriff Wildland Team was placed on stand-by and the Fire Marshal responded. Brush 111 arrived on scene to a wind driven urban interface fire between Land’s End Road and Kannah Creek Road, and started to put water on the fire from top of the road. Brush 111 requested Tender 111 and mutual-aid from Grand Junction Fire Department. Brush 4 responded to the scene and began direct attack. The Sheriff Wildland Team was dispatched at 11:30 and the fire marshal took command from Lands End. Crews battled 15 acres with 15 foot length flames running to the east and power lines down, and requested Grand Valley Power to the scene. Command requested an additional tender and Brush unit, and East Orchard Mesa Fire Protection District was dispatched for a Brush unit and Tender. The Sheriff Wildland Team sent out and additional engine and the county shops sent out a tender as well. Crews worked the fire for several hours with an extended mop up with hot spots until after 18:00. Kannah Creek Road was shut down during the time of the fire. This fire was near the date of last year’s Kannah Creek Fire which had 50ft tall flames and roared into the highway which brought several agencies together. The fire is under investigation by the fire marshal. No injuries were reported.
