Defensive Barn Fire

At 22:49 on October 14th, 2019 South Metro Fire Rescue responded to an outbuilding fire in the 5300 block of S. Biloxi Ct. in unincorporated Arapahoe County. Multiple 911 callers reported seeing a barn on fire and that there were horses in the area. Engine 23 arrived on scene, and found a barn next to a house fully engulfed in flames. Homeowners also reported gas inside the barn. Firefighters went defensive on the barn, fighting the fire from the outside. Firefighters also put out grass fires that started up around the barn to keep the fire from spreading to homes nearby. All residents and horses were accounted for and no one was injured. The contents inside the barn at the time of the fire include motorcycles, a car, hay and a skid loader. Crews remained on scene for hours with extensive overhaul from fires reigniting. Because the fire was burning in a rural field, firefighters had to stretch 1,800 feet of five inch diameter hose from hydrants down the road for relay pumping operations. It is estimated that around 10,000 gallons of water was used to put the fire out. Once the fire was under control, crews also setup drafting operations to continue putting water on the barn fire hotspots. South Metro Tender 41 dumped the water from its tank into a portable water tank on the ground. Firefighters drafted that water through the engine and into their hose lines as if it were a hydrant. The tender then drove to a hydrant down the road to refill and start the process over again so that water was continuously available. Arapahoe Rescue Patrol remained on scene through the night to monitor the fire until investigators returned the next morning to continue gathering pictures and details.
