Just after 17:00 on November 21st, 2019 South Metro Fire Rescue responded to an MVA with extrication needed on northbound I-25 between Castle Pines Pkwy and Ridgegate Pkwy in Surrey Ridge. First arriving Engine 36 reported multiple vehicles across the highway, assumed command and requested the northbound lanes be closed. During their scene assessment 7 patients were identified and the incident was upgraded to a “Medium Mass Casualty Incident,” used by SMFR when 6-10 patients are injured. District Chief 1 assumed command and assigned Engine 36 as the Rescue Group Supervisor. A casualty collection point was established, and medic units were sent there to transport the already triaged patients. As the incident progressed additional patients were located ½ mile north of the main incident scene. A total of 12 patients were transported to area hospitals from 15 vehicles that were involved in the accident. Additional information provided by South Metro Fire Rescue
