The Arvada Fire Protection District christened their new Engine 53 with a dedication and in-service ceremony at Station 6 (Station 56) on March 8th, 2021. Fire Chief Mike Piper and other district officials gave a few remarks about the importance of the new engine and the ISO Class 1 rating that was recently was awarded to the district. Challenge coins were presented to the engineers, and the opening prayer by Chaplain Kevin Kirby. Teresa Schaefer, widow of the late Lt. Jim Schaefer, performed the wet-down on the new engine using water from the former Engine 53. After the wet-down, the new Engine 53 was then rung in by engineer Bert Brooks and Captain Mike Kulp went over the air to put the new engine into service while the old Engine 53 was placed in reserved status. The new engine was pushed back into the fire station, a tradition that dates to the time when horses were used to pulled engines but were not able to push them. Engine 53 will serve the community out of Station 6 while the new Station 3 is being constructed.
