Second Alarm Defensive Fire

At 16:54 on February 23rd, 2021 Denver Fire Department received multiple reports for smoke and fire coming from a warehouse at 3344 Walnut St. Engine 9 was first due to heavy smoke and fire from the entire building and laid the water supply from 34th St. and Walnut St. with Engine 3 arriving simultaneously and plugging from 33rd St. and Walnut St. with a 2 1/2 line to the Charlie side. Truck 8 and Tower 1 arrived and assigned to the roof, and Truck 8 laddered the roof from on Alpha side with Truck 4. Rescue 2 reported heavy fire throughout the large abandoned commercial building. At 17:04 command immediately upgraded the call to a 2nd alarm as the fire continued to grow and collapse zones were established to the Alpha and Delta side. At 17:17 companies were ordered an emergency evacuation via air horn and radio communication and defensive operations were set up to the roof. PAR’s were requested and completed by all company divisions. Tower 9, Truck 8, Truck 4, and Tower 1 performed aerial attack to the roof. Engine 1 set up 2 Blitz fire attack from the Alpha side with Engine 3 on a 2 1/2 line to the Charlie side. Utilities were secured and gas and electric companies were notified. Firefighters spent about an hour battling the fire with an additional two performing primary and secondary searches. Crews worked an extended overhaul on hot spots.
