Aurora Gas Leak

On December 19th, 2022 at approximately 09:00 Aurora Fire Rescue was dispatched to a reported gas leak near E. Smokey Hill Rd. and E. Arapahoe Rd. A construction company ruptured a four-inch gas line while working in the area. Engine 14 set up hose lines as a precaution and called for the hazardous materials team. Nearby Cherokee Trail High School and Everbrook Academy self-evacuated do to a strong gas odor in their buildings. Crews were on scene about an hour while Xcel capped the leak. Engine 15 and Cherry Creek School District checked the high school to ensure levels inside were safe. Ladder 13 checked the preschool who evacuated their students into buses outside. Once the air was safe there, firefighters assisted getting the children back into the building.
