Huerfano Road Fire
Huerfano Road Fire
Around 14:30 on March 2nd, 2022 Pueblo County Emergency Services Bureau (ESB) Fire Team was dispatched by the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center to a smoke investigation in the area of Broadacre Rd. and Doyle Rd. Callers reported black smoke southeast of this location about a mile away. As the fire grew smoke could be seen across the majority of Pueblo County and multiple 9-1-1 callers reported the smoke. Due to the size of the smoke column, mutual-aid was immediately requested from several departments. Crews arrived on scene in the 6200 block of Huerfano Rd. to find a large brush fire burning in the Huerfano River bottom. There were some structures on the east side of the fire and crews set up to protect them. West and East divisions were set up as crews began initial attack but due to the fire being in the river bottom access was tough. The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention & Control MMA flew the fire around 16:30 and mapped the fire at just over 130 acres and marked the two major heads of the fire. Crews remained on scene until 21:00 and then shifted to night operations until sunrise. The cause is under investigation and no injuries were reported.
