On August 24th 2022 at 07:44 West Metro Fire Rescue with Arvada Fire Protection District responded to a reported house fire in the 14100 block of W. 22nd Ave. Engine 5 advised Jeffcom that smoke showing from the station. Engine 5 arrived to smoke showing from a one-story single-family with involvement and puled a 2 1/2 for fire attack and search with Medic 5. Chief 2 arrived and assumed command and Engine 17 secured the water supply to Engine 5. Engine 6, Engine 2 and Tower 2 arrived and assisted with primary search and fire attack. The fire was accidental and caused by a natural gas heater on the patio that was connected to the main gas line. The heater potentially malfunctioned. Three people were home at the time, all were able to get out. Firefighters rescued three dogs and a bird from inside. The home sustained heavy damage. The fire was able to move easily through the first floor, because the front door was left open when residents escaped, creating a “chimney” effect- basically an air flow from the back to the front of the residence.
