At 12:37 on August 1st, 2022 West Metro Fire Rescue with auto-aid from Arvada Fire Protection District responded to a possible structure fire in the 3200 block of Routt St. in Wheat Ridge. Jeffcom advised 911 caller reporting heavy smoke coming out of the house. Engine 17 arrived on scene to a two-story single-family with smoke from the attic and pulled a 1 3/4 to the Charlie side for fire attack. Engine 5 arrived and established the water supply and Engine 5 pulled a 2nd line to the Charlie side with Medic 5. District 1 arrived and assumed command on the Alpha side and assigned Tower 2 with the primary search, Engine 2 as RIT and Medic 52 with medical. Firefighters found high heat in the basement with fire moving through the home in between floors and void spaces. Command requested 3 additional engines and a medic to the scene. The kitchen floor was in danger of collapse, and crews pulled out and fire went to a defensive strategy. A piercing nozzle was used to put a hose through the floor to the basement below. The kitchen floor did collapse, limiting some access to the seat of the fire. Firefighters worked in temperatures over 90 degrees. One firefighter from Engine 2 was transported to a local hospital by Medic 3 with heat exhaustion. The fire was put under control at 14:29 and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
