Byers Structure Fire
At 18:52 on September 20th, 2023 the I-70 corridor was dispatched to a reported commercial structure fire on E. Briarwood Place in Byers. Calling parties reported a warehouse type metal building with heavy smoke and fire. First arriving Chief 31 reported a large metal building with an attached residential section well involved. Chief 71 assumed command in an offensive strategy with Chief 31 assigned as Safety. Multiple handlines were stretched due to the approximately 10,000 square foot structure being filled with a massive fire load of combustible materials. Additional tenders were requested due to the fire flow needed to combat the blaze. Crews remained on-scene for over 15 hours extinguishing the fire and dealing with hot spots. Ten tenders were utilized, all of which made multiple round trips to the scene. Three small rekindles were also addressed over the next 36 hours. The fire scene investigation itself stretched over 2 days. Investigators from the Division of Fire Prevention & Control and the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office assisted Chief 81 with the investigation which is on-going at this time.
