West Metro Defensive Building Fire

On August 22nd, 2023 at 09:35 Jeffcom 911 dispatched West Metro Fire Rescue to a reported building on fire at the southeast corner of W. 13th Ave. and Depew St. in Lakewood. Engine 1 arrived to a abandoned building with active fire and pulled 1 3/4 for defensive strategy. District 1 arrived to a one-story abandoned warehouse in the defensive operations. Tower 2 started master stream operations. Crews found old tires and shelves of lumber that fueled the fire and with the quick action by firefighters the fire was kept contained to the property. People experiencing homelessness were reported to be using the abandoned building as a shelter. West Metro Fire investigator reported that the fire was human caused.
