Bennett I-70 MVA Semi Fire
Bennett I-70 MVA Semi Fire
On August 7th at 11:13 Bennett-Watkins Fire Rescue was dispatched to a reported MVA with a semi on fire on I-70 westbound at MM 302. As units were going enroute Medic 71, which was transporting a patient, rolled up on the crash and reported two semi’s on fire with all lanes of I-70 westbound blocked and one yellow status patient on-scene. First arriving Quint 91 initiated fire attack on the semi located to the east which had a mixed load of consumer commodities. Engine 92 responded eastbound in the westbound lanes and initiated fire attack on the semi to the west which had dumped a large load of lumber across all lanes of I-70 and the median. Chief 92 assumed Command upon arrival and requested additional tenders and law enforcement to close I-70. No hazmat was involved other than the semi saddle tanks. Brush resources were also requested due to a small wildland component. Medic 93 assumed patient care of the MVA victim who was transported to a local hospital. As additional tenders arrived fire attack progressed without incident, although extensive overhaul was needed. Colorado State Patrol Hazmat also off-loaded remaining fuel from one saddle tank. Heavy equipment was needed to clear the highway, which was closed for hours. Information and photos provided by Strasburg Fire Protection District
