Byers East County Road 22 Interface Fire

At 14:51 on October 22nd, 2024 Byers Fire Protection District and Strasburg Fire Protection District were dispatched to a reported small brush fire in the 72600 block of E. County Road 22. Based on multiple 911 calls the incident was quickly upgraded to an I-70 Corridor Matrix Wildland/Urban Interface Response. The weather at the time was 74 degrees, RH of 4% and winds gusting to 9 MPH. First arriving Chief 71 sized up a slow-moving fire in medium fuels that also involved two vehicles and a camper along with several piles of large timbers. While brush apparatus went to work on the wildland component Brush Engine 71 was assigned to the vehicles fires along with Chief 81. The car fire was controlled quickly, however radiant heat had impinged on an adjacent medium size box truck igniting a load of furniture and assorted household goods. In addition to the I-70 corridor units two additional tenders were requested. The various fires were quickly contained, however units remained on the scene for two hours conducting overhaul.
