On June 23rd, 2024 Denver 911 Communications Center dispatched Denver Fire Department Engine 1 to a outside smoke investigation in the 400 block of W. 13th Ave. Engine 1 arrived to a working fire from a one-story duplex, possibly abandoned with heavy smoke showing and laid in and started fire attack and the the fire was upgraded to a working structure fire. Due to the heavy fortifications crews had to cut their way through multiple door and window coverings just to make entry. Tower 1’s crew was working to make entry when they heard someone screaming from around the corner. Upon further investigation, Tower 1 located one person trapped behind a fortified basement window and the crew cut the reinforcements and made entry to the basement to recue the trapped party. Truck 8 went to the roof and due to the high heat and the complexities of this building the incident commander elevated the response to a 2nd alarm. Crews were able to get the fire under control and performed overhaul. One patient was transported with unknown injuries and one firefighter was also transported to a local hospital.
