West Metro 2nd Alarm

At 15:10 on January 15th, 2024 West Metro Fire Rescue SAM 1 advised Jeffcom of smoke in the area of W. Colfax Ave. & Harlan St. and started the investigation. SAM 1 found a working fire at the Rocky Mountain Motel, 6001 W. Colfax Ave. in Lakewood and requested a full response. SAM 1 took command and requested a 2nd alarm response with heavy fire and a victim. Engine 1 arrived and started fire attack with a 1 3/4 and Medic 1 started patient care. Engine 1 started on their own water supply, but had a frozen hydrant. Engine 16 arrived and started the primary search, Engine 2 pulled a 2nd line off Engine 1 for fire attack and Tower 2 set-up for master stream operations. District 1 arrived and assumed command in the offensive strategy and Engine 3 established the water supply at Ingalls St. & W. Colfax Ave. to Engine 1. Medic 1 transported one patient to a local hospital with unknown injuries and Medic 3 assigned as medical. Tower 8 arrived and assigned to set-up with aerial master stream ops on Colfax and Engine 7 established the water supply to Tower 8. Crews worked heavy fire and the fire went into defensive operations with extension into the attic space. The fire was put out under control at 15:40 and out at 16:43 and crews started an extensive overhaul and investigation. W. Colfax Ave. was shut down in both directions for fire operations. The fire started in one unit in the center of the building, then spread to other units. The extremely cold weather made it challenging, as two fire hydrants on scene were frozen. American Red Cross was called to the scene for displaced occupants. The cause is under investigation. Additional information provided by West Metro Fire Rescue
