Rocky Ford Structure Fire

On November 24th, 2024 at approximately 20:00 the Rocky Ford Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at the old Liberty School, 608 N. 11th Ave. Firefighters arrived on scene, found a rubbish fire in one of the classrooms and requested mutual aid from neighboring departments. Crews were on scene about three and a half hours extinguishing the fire, checking for hotspots and mopping up. Crews were called back to the building at about 05:30 on November 25th, 2024 after the fire rekindled and extended into void spaces in the hallway ceilings. No injuries were reported. The site is know to be used by vagrants and the fire is being investigated by the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control. The Rocky Ford Fire Department, Manzanola Rural Fire Protection District, La Junta Fire Department, Fowler Rural Fire Protection District and Rocky Ford Police Department all responded to the scene.
