Cortez Fire Protection District
Cortez Fire Protection District (CFPD), covering 162 square miles in Montezuma County (Colorado) including the areas of Alkali Canyon, Conquistador, Cortez Municipal Airport, Crow Canyon, Denny Lake, Highline Ditch, Kiwanis Park, McElmo Creek, Lakeview, Rocky Ford Ditch, Totten Lake & Totten Reservoir. Cortez Fire Protection District first started in 1886 with a few dedicated volunteers involving ranchers, miners and townsmen as a bucket brigade. In 1911 the first formal fire department was formed as the Cortez Volunteer Fire Department. In 1986 the Cortez Fire Protection District was established.
Cortez Fire Protection District has mutual-aid agreements with the Dolores Fire Protection District, Lewis-Arriola Volunteer Fire Department, Mancos Fire Protection District, Mesa Verde National Park Fire Management and Ute Mountain Agency Fire Rescue.
Cortez Fire Protection District is part of the Tri-State Firemen’s Association.
Ambulance transport is provided by SouthWest Health EMS.
Cortez Fire Protection District is dispatched by Cortez Communications Center.
