Aurora 2nd Alarm Fire

On February 23rd, 2025 at 15:48, 911 calls reporting the smoke began pouring into dispatch centers across the metro area. Aurora Fire Rescue and Denver Fire Department responded a commercial fire at 19754 E. 35th Drive. Aurora Engine 12 responded from their firehouse just 0.2 miles away from the scene and observed two semi-trucks fully engulfed with flames lapping up the side of a large warehouse. Due to the size of the building and potential for fire spread, a 2nd Alarm was transmitted. Firefighters deployed hose lines and aggressively worked to control the fire, aided by the building sprinkler system that activated and helped prevent flames from extending inside. All the building occupants and truck operators evacuated safely, and no injuries occurred. The fire was placed under control within 20 minutes, but the work wasn’t over yet. The Hazardous Materials Team mitigated a diesel fuel spill from damaged saddle tanks on the semi-trucks and offloaded the remaining fuel by siphoning it into a drum. Additionally, the smoke-filled interior of the structure couldn’t be cleared out with the in-building air system or skylights, and South Metro Fan 22 arrived to assist with venting smoke out of the building. The initial fire investigation determined the fire was accidental, caused by a malfunctioning refrigerator unit on one of the semi-trailers. Additional information provided by Aurora Fire Rescue
