June 7th, 2010 Denver Fire Department responded to a power outage at Rose Medical Center, with the back-up generator failing to kick on when full power was lost, and forced the hospital to evacuate critical care patients and other patients to other area hospitals. The back-up generator started smoking and was shut down, and checked by firefighters. The hospital also had an explosion in the medical laboratory and the ICU. This power outage was caused by a Xcel Energy sub-station that was damaged in an explosion which caused a power outage to over 31,00 customers in East Denver.
