Carter Lake Wildland Fire
At 09:21 on November 24th, 2012 Loveland Fire Rescue Authority was notified of a grass fire near Carter Lake Dam 1 and the swim beach, the situation quickly escalated due to the extremely high winds in the area. A 2nd and 3rd alarms were struck within the first hour bring in resources from several fire department. Extremely high winds and gusts around 50 mph were fanning the fire rapidly to the east. Sand from the swim beach was being blown across the dam making visibility as low as 10 to 20 feet at times. 54 personnel from roughly 10 agencies responded to assist in one way or another with this incident. By 15:00 the fire was declared under control and 100% contained. Power lines were being tossed around in the wind bumping into each other and throwing off sparks this morning which caused the fire. The fire quickly burned up a ridge and down into the sedona hills subdivision east of Carter Lake. No home were evacuated but 8 to 12 structures were threatened at the peak of the fire activity and firefighters worked in steep, rocky, rough terrain to contain the fire.
