Clear Creek Multi-Car Accident

At 01:46 on January 23rd, 2013 Golden Fire Department was dispatched west of Tunnel # 1 on Hwy. 6 for a multi-car accident, rolled over oil tanker and two vehicles in the ice/water.  Upon arrival there were three entrapments in two vehicles approximately 200 yards apart.  Both vehicles were over the embankment in the ice/water of Clear Creek.  Approximately 200 gallons of asphalt oil leaking from a 6000 gallon hot tanker.  Mutual-aid was requested from Fairmount Fire Protection District for additional manpower and extrication equipment.  Three patients were extricated by fire personnel.  A total of five patients were transported to a local hospital with three being in critical condition and two in fair condition.  Colorado State Patrol Hazmat Team responded and secured the leak with assistance from Golden.  The tanker contents was off loaded into another tanker before up righting.  The asphalt oil solidified in the cooler temperatures and on the ice.
