At 16:54 on August 5th, 2018 Byers Fire Protection District responded to an outside fire in the area of the 700 block of S. County Rd. 173 (Bradbury Rd.). East MetCom dispatch advised units that the RP is reporting that a lightning strike hit a tree, and smoke with fire is in the creek bed. Brush Engine 71 and Brush 71 arrived to smoke showing from a one acre grass fire and Brush 71 started fast attack on the fire. Crews request additional units to the scene due to the wind shift, and the call was upgraded to a large brush fire and a full response from the I-70 corridor was called. Crews reported the fire grew to about 10 acres heading to the north in heavy timber by the West Bijou Creek. Just after the call another lighting strike was reported in Deer Trail and some of the units were diverted to that call, which was put out quickly and were sent back to the County Rd. 173 fire. Crews got the fire out at 22:00 and Chief 71, Brush 71 & Tender 71 remained on scene for night watch for hot spots. A rekindle of the fire was called out on August 6th, 2018 at 16:26 with crews responding back to the scene with a few more acres burned and were able to get control of the fire out at 17:00 with an extended overhaul.
