Strasburg 1-70 Tractor-Trailer MVA & Fire

At 03:09 on May 9th, 2020 Strasburg Fire Protection District & Byers Fire Protection District was dispatched to a reported commercial carrier fire on eastbound I-70 & mile marker 311. Engine 81 arrived and sized-up a loaded tractor-trailer that had crashed through a large section of guardrail before rolling into the median and catching on fire. No placards were visible and the tractor was fully involved, as various parts that were spread across the interstate. Small brush fires were also showing on both sides of eastbound I-70. Engine 81 assumed 311 command in an offensive strategy and requested additional resources from Bennett-Watkins Fire Rescue. Fire Attack, Medical and Haz-Mat Groups were established to mitigate the scene. Two patients had self-extricated from the tractor, and both were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The scene was then turned over to CSP and CDOT for further remediation. Eastbound I-70 remained closed for an extended period of time for haz-mat cleanup and inspection of the bridge that the truck had torn the guardrail off of.
