On September 17th, 2022 at 08:53 Boulder County Communications (1800) dispatched Mountain View Fire Rescue, Boulder Rural Fire Rescue, Lafayette Fire Department and Boulder Emergency Squad to a possible plane crash in the 9800 block of Niwot Rd. south of Longmont. Medic 2224 arrived on scene about a half-mile from Hwy. 287 with one plane down in a field with heavy damage and reports of a mid-air collision with a 2nd plane down. Chief 2260 arrived and assumed command. The use of Lifeline helicopter, aerial drones, and manpower aided in locating the second aircraft which was difficult to locate immediately. The 2nd plane was found around Niwot Rd. and 95th St. Information released from the NTSB was that the two planes involved were a Cessna 172 and a Sonex Xenos. The Cessna aircraft was flown by two pilots, both were declared dead on the scene and the Xenos had one on board which they also did not survive the crash. The FAA and NTSB are conducting the investigation of the cause of the crash. Additional information and photos by Chris Rodgers / Code 10 Photography
