On May 11th, 2026 at approximately 12:40 the South Adams County Fire Department and Adams County Fire Rescue were dispatched to a reported fire at the Suncor Refinery on Brighton Blvd. Heavy black smoke could be seen for miles around the Denver metro area. Crews arrived on scene to find the facility has experienced a power issue forming them to restart some of their systems causing increased noise and visible smoke. The process which is called Flaring is an important safety measure and environmental control tool that keeps the facility running safely. The outside crews were quickly released while the Suncor Fire Brigade dealt with the incident inside the facility. Suncor deployed a high pressure water stream to help reduce the flames and keep parts of the facility cool. No injuries nor health hazards were reported as a result of this incident.
