On October 21st, 2026 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conducted the annual fall prescribed burn at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refugee in Commerce City. This is part of the several planned burns this year and was planned to burn up to 1462 acres. These seasonal burns are used to reduce accumulated plant litter, reinvigorate growth of native prairie vegetation, control weeds, and improve wildlife habitat. They also help land managers reduce wildfire risk in areas with high fuel loads. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Wildland Fire Management, Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (James Peak Module), Evergreen Fire Protection District, Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District, Mountain View Fire Rescue and South Adams County Fire Department assisted with the prescribed burn.
