In 1963 the district took over the assets of the Hayden Fire Department.

West Routt Fire Protection District has mutual-aid or auto-aid agreements with the North Routt Fire Protection District, Oak Creek Fire Protection District, Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue & Yampa Fire Protection District.

West Routt Fire Protection District is dispatched by Routt County Communications.
