On July 27th, 2025 at 19:53 West Douglas County Fire Protection District and South Metro Fire Rescue were dispatched to a small vegetation fire near 2903 Bears Den Drive in Douglas County. Following the dispatch a nearby resident and WDFPD volunteer provided a scene size up and the incident was upgraded to a large brush fire response, with additional mutual aid resources.
The fire was approximately 1-acre burning in annual grasses and oak brush with occasional torching and fast spread. Chief 131 was the initial incident commander, Engine 132, Brush Engine 40 and Engine 40 positioned for structure defense and deployed progressive hose lines for direct attack. Due to the wind, fuel and terrain alignment, four homes were evacuated while additional crews responded. A unified command was established between Douglas County Sheriff, OEM, South Metro and West Douglas Fire. At the peak of the incident the fire was organized into 3 divisions (Alpha, Mike and Zulu) for span of control. By sunset forward progress had been stopped, no structures were damaged, and no injuries occurred. Extensive mop-up and saw work was needed in the heavier fuels and crews remained on scene overnight. The cause is under investigation.
