Mesa County Brush Fire

On March 22nd, 2009 at approximately 19:30 Grand Junction Fire Department and Mesa County Sheriff’s Office Wildland Fire Team were dispatched to a grass fire on an island in the Colorado River near Highway 50. Crews arrived on scene and found a fast moving fire fueled by tall grass and heavy winds. The fire spread to the north side of the river and claimed an abandoned building. Authorities believe the fire started at a transient camp on the island. No injuries were reported.
