In the early morning on June 9th, 2012 Rist Canyon Volunteer Fire Department responded to a reported smoke column in the Roosevelt National Forest off Buckhorn Rd. in Larimer County. Crews arrived in the area and found the access to the fire accessible only by a four wheel drive road. A SEAT and Helicopter were ordered immediately. With rapid fire spread and very extreme burning conditions, evacuations were called for: Buckhorn Canyon, Cache La Poudre Canyon, Davis Ranch, Flower Road, Glacier View, Paradise Park, Pine Acres Poudre Canyon, Poudre Park, Rist Canyon, Stove Prairie and the Whale Rock areas. Rist Canyon Fire Station 2 on Bellvue Mountain was destroyed in the fire. The fire was 100% contained on June 30th, 2012, and started from a lightning strike. The fire burned 87,284 acres, destroying 259 homes and one reported death.
