At 22:03 on July 23rd, 2018, South Metro Fire Rescue and Castle Rock Fire Rescue responded to a mutual aid assist with West Douglas County Fire Protection District for vehicle accident requiring technical rescue on Highway 67 just west of Oak Valley Rd. When West Douglas Firefighters arrived they found a cement truck down a steep embankment with heavy damage and used ropes to descend down. Sadly, once crews were able to access the truck it was determined that the single occupant did not survive the crash. The rescue efforts turned into a recovery operation that took several hours to complete. Chief 131 assumed command, District Chief 3 was assigned as Rescue Group Supervisor and Safety 32 was assigned as Incident Safety Officer. A chainsaw was needed to clear vegetation so Firefighters had space to work with their specialized vehicle stabilization and extrication equipment. Those heavy items were lowered down from the highway in a Stokes Basket with a rope pulley system. The extrication took 3 hours and 10 minutes to complete, and then the truck was removed from the valley at 04:45. Colorado State Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.
