North Highway 67 Fire
At 18:32 on July 30th, 2019 West Douglas Fire Protection District, Castle Rock Fire Rescue, Jackson 105 Fire Protection District and South Metro Fire Rescue responded to a wildland incident west of Sedalia. 911 callers reported 2 fires burning near Madge Gulch Rd. and Hwy. 67, a large plume of smoke was already visible from miles away. The smallest fire along Madge Gulch was contained at 50×50 feet and quickly extinguished. The larger “North Highway 67 Fire” was burning grass, brush and trees in very rugged terrain. Unified command was established at the intersection of Madge Gulch and Hwy. 67 with the Incident Dispatch Team. The fire was divided into 2 divisions and Safety 18 was assigned as lookout. Firefighters hiked up to the fire where they used hand tools and chainsaws to build containment line. The US Forest Service, BLM, Douglas County Sheriff and OEM were also on scene assisting. Although no evacuations were ordered Highway 67 was closed for several hours. DFPC Multi-Mission Aircraft flew above the fire and measured it at 4.93 acres. Personnel remained on scene throughout the night and additional crews arrived on Wednesday morning to continue containment and extinguishment. One Firefighter was evaluated for a minor injury and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Additional story and information provided by South Metro Fire Rescue.
