Centennial Airport Air Alert 3
South Metro Aircraft Incident
At 10:48 on July 20th, 2024 South Metro Fire Rescue responded to an aircraft emergency at Centennial Airport. A twin-engine Commander 500S departed the airport to the southeast and a short time later radioed a mayday to air traffic control. The aircraft experienced an engine failure and returned toward the airport. The air traffic control tower immediately notified SMFR that an “Air Alert 2” inflight aircraft emergency was occurring, and units were dispatched. The Commander made an emergency landing on Runway 35L and due to loss of control, traveled into the grass on the west side of the runway. The response was upgraded to an “Air Alert 3” aircraft emergency and additional resources were dispatched. Upon arrival, SMFR established a unified command with Centennial Airport Operations and Arapahoe County Sheriff Deputies. The aircraft was upright, with no fire, no fuel leak and both occupants safely exited. Fire Medics transported one person to the hospital with minor injuries, and no other injuries occurred.
