The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service held a prescribed burn at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge in Commerce City on March 12th and March 13th, 2024 just before the area received a heavy spring snowfall. Firefighters burned more then 1000 acres inside the arsenal burning vegetation to mitigate potential fire danger later in the season. The burn was designed to promote habitat restoration, noxious weed control, and fuels reductions at the refuge. The refuge, which covers 15,000 acres just 10 miles northeast of Denver, and its wildlife will see a lot of benefit from these controlled fires. Nearly a dozen agencies participated in the burn on both days which included some of the following departments: Arvada Fire Protection District, Fairmount Fire Protection District, Mountain View Fire Rescue, South Adams County Fire Department, South Metro Fire Rescue, West Metro Fire Rescue, Westminster Fire Department and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Wildland Fire Management. Additional information provided by Arvada Fire Protection District and Mountain View Fire Rescue
