On May 27th, 2026 at 02:03 Jeffcom 911 dispatched Foothills Fire Protection District and Highland Rescue Team to rollover MVA on I-70 westbound near mile marker 258 just west of Golden. Crews arrived to find a fuel tanker that was on it’s side with a large fuel spill and a hazardous materials response was requested. Firefighters contained the fuel spilling on the ground and across the highway, helping prevent runoff entering storm drains and causing contamination. Before the tanker could be placed upright and towed, firefighters also needed to drill a hole into the tanker to offload the remaining fuel from its compartments. Crews used a hose to transfer the fuel from the crashed tanker into another tanker nearby. While doing this, grounding and bonding is a critical safety measure to prevent static electricity ignition of flammable liquids and vapors. No injuries occurred in the crash and I-70 was closed westbound for several hours during the incident.
