At approximately 23:45 on August 16th, 2026 Boulder Rural Fire Rescue and Boulder Fire-Rescue Department responded to a reported building fire near the intersection of N. 55th St. and Niwot Rd. in unincorporated Boulder County. Battalion 143 arrived on scene with a working fire and to upgrade the call to a fill the box with two additional water tenders. Crews found a 20-by-60-foot hay storage structure in the 5400 block of Niwot Rd. that was fully involved and a smaller nearby office building on fire. Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies evacuated nearby occupied structures on the property as a precaution, and horses were relocated with assistance from the property owners and responding personnel. Although deputies were prepared to evacuate neighboring residences, no off‑property evacuations were required due to firefighters establishing control of the incident quickly. Crews remained on scene throughout the night and into the following day on August 17th, 2026, conducting extensive overhaul operations and ensuring the fire was fully extinguished. Additional structures impacted included a small shed/outbuilding, an empty grain silo, Conex storage container around 300 hay bales including a hay barn. No injures were reported and no animals were injured. Niwot Rd. and N. 55th St. was closed during the response. The MAFIT (Multi-Agency Fire Investigation Team) was notified and will conduct an investigation.
