The 18th Annual Black Hawk 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb was held on September 11th, 2026, at the Ameristar Casino Resort Spa in Black Hawk, marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks. The opening ceremony began with bagpipe music performed by Scott Beach, followed by welcoming remarks from Black Hawk Fire Department Firefighter Steven Roybal. A special moment of silence was also observed in recognition of the Greeley Fire Department following the recent loss of one of its members. Remarks were provided by Don Damond, Ameristar Vice President of Casino Operations; Regina Livingston, Advancement Program Manager with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF); Black Hawk Mayor David Spellman; and Black Hawk Fire Lieutenant Chris Williams. Captain Jennifer Hembroff and Engineer David Young also led a solemn remembrance that included an SCBA alarm and traditional bell ceremony. Participants then entered the Ameristar hotel tower to complete the equivalent of 110 stories, symbolizing the climb made by FDNY firefighters inside the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001. Each step served as a tribute to those who gave their lives that day and to the many first responders whose lives were later lost to 9/11-related illnesses. Following the climb, participants gathered for a post-climb reception. During the reception, Black Hawk Fire Executive Administrative Assistant Rebecca Blondo and Firefighter Steven Roybal presented a plaque to Ameristar in recognition of its continued support and partnership with the event. This year’s stair climb brought together participants from agencies including the Greeley Fire Department, Black Hawk Police Department, Black Hawk Fire Department, Aurora Fire Rescue, Central City Fire Department, and others. Their participation helped continue the promise to remember the lives lost, recognize the sacrifices made, and ensure that the legacy of September 11 is never forgotten. The annual stair climb is organized by the City of Black Hawk Fire Department and sponsored by the Ameristar Casino Resort Spa. Proceeds from the event support the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and its programs for fire service survivors. The NFFF provides critical assistance and resources to the families, friends, and fellow firefighters of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, including those lost on September 11th, 2001, and those who have died in the years since from 9/11-related illnesses.
