Parker 2nd Alarm Interface Fire
Parker 2nd Alarm Interface Fire
At 11:02 on June 26th, 2018 South Metro Fire Rescue Engine 47 was dispatched to investigate a report of smoke in the area of Tomahawk Road and Summit Ridge Road in Douglas County. A second 911 caller reported a barn on fire at the same location and additional units were dispatched. When Engine 47 arrived they were faced with a large fire burning debris piles, a small outbuilding and spreading through the grass. Once again the incident escalated, this time to a Wildland Interface Fire response. Firefighters worked to protect the nearby structures and contain the grass fire, a task made even more difficult without fire hydrants nearby. Tenders were used to shuttle water from a hydrant near Inspiration Drive and Rockinghorse Parkway to the scene. District Chief 31 assumed command and built an organizational structure with Safety 31 as the Zulu Division, Battalion Chief 61 as the Alpha Division, Safety 35 as the Incident Safety Officer and Battalion Chief 41 as the Level 2 Staging Area Manager. A contracted fire helicopter “9TA” is currently dedicated to Douglas County, it immediately launched with a representative from Emergency Management on board to provide aerial reconnaissance. The helicopter also carries a 180 gallon bucket that can be filled with water to fight fires, if needed. Due to the assets at risk, high temperature and low humidity, a 2nd Alarm was requested which brought more firefighters to the scene. At 11:36 the grass fire was completely contained and longer posed a threat but extensive work was needed to extinguish hotspots. Crews will remain on scene through the afternoon to ensure that no flare-ups occur. 2 outbuildings were destroyed, no homes were damaged and no injuries occurred.
