At 05:19 on November 17th, 2018 Littleton Fire Rescue and South Metro Fire Rescue responded to an apartment fire at 5829 South Datura St.  Littleton Police Officers were first to arrive on scene at the 6-story senior housing building and immediately began assisting and rescuing residents. Firefighters advanced a hose line inside the building and quickly extinguished heavy fire conditions inside a 1st floor apartment.  1 person was trapped on a 2nd floor balcony and was rescued by firefighters using a ground ladder.  With several people immediately identified with smoke inhalation and injuries the incident was reclassified as a “MCI” – mass casualty incident, which prompted the response of additional ambulances and fire crews.  Heavy smoke conditions in the hallways and apartment units created a dangerous environment for the residents who were temporarily relocated to the Life Center across the street.  A total of 13 people were transported to the hospital, 3 in serious condition and 10 in stable condition.  The American Red Cross established a shelter for displaced residents at the Littleton United Methodist Church at 5894 S. Datura St. until the building can be reoccupied or other housing arrangements can be made.  Approximately 100 first responders including law enforcement, firefighters and paramedics responded to the incident.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.
