On December 18th, 2023 at 08:07 Thornton Fire Department, Westminster Fire Department and North Metro Fire Rescue District responded to a possible semi trailer fire on northbound I-25 at E. 136th Ave. Truck 6 arrived to a semi trailer hauling trash with heavy smoke showing and a working fire, pulled a 1 3/4 for fire attack and Truck 74 set-up as traffic safety and water supply to Truck 6. Battalion 62 arrived and assumed I-25 command and assigned Truck 74 to pull a 2nd line in for fire control. Crews found a deep seated trash fire and the driver was able to get the tractor-trailer unhooked from the semi and dumped on the side of the highway for fire control. Truck 62 arrived and set-up an additional water supply to Truck 6. Command requested a tender from Brighton Fire Rescue District for more water. CDOT also helped out at the scene with additional resources to spread out the trash contents, so crews could address any remaining spot fires and smoldering materials. The fire was fully extinguished and crews worked an extensive overhaul. All of I-25 northbound lanes were closed until around 11:00. No injuries occurred.
